I’ve decided to start blogging again. I’m not sure how to define this blog thematically, but it will include a mix of things on my mind, things I do and see, my journey as an emerging poet and more.
To get started, I’ll give a little background on what I’ve been up to lately. I’ve just completed my first year as an MFA writing student at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). What a year it has been! I am blessed to have gotten the best mentor: Maggie Nelson. If you aren’t aware of her work, you should be. She’s been so helpful, always willing to read as much as I give her. I’m writing poetic memoir, or poetry as memoir–a collection of poems dealing with my mother, father and grandmother as central figures. The poems vary a lot but there is definitely a prevalent tone.
I’ve been working diligently on this project and am happy to report that I’ve got almost 50 pages written already! Hooray! I’ve also been sending my best poems out to literary magazines (28 so far–including 3 rejections) in hopes of finding a place to get them published. I say, why not get started now?
Oh, other fine news from this year: I was one of eight CalArts students to receive a Beutner Scholarship for Excellence in the Arts for my poetry. It’s a $50,000 scholarship that is used to pay for your final year at CalArts. It’s very exciting to have received this prestigious honor because it was based almost entirely on my work.
Summer in Los Angeles is starting off well–various work gigs are coming up. I’m enjoying the weather, spending time with my boyfriend, Max, and sweet little dog, Betsy, and exploring. Max, Betsy and I will be heading off to Santa Fe to visit my family and friends in a few weeks and I’m really excited to see everyone there.
More updates later. Hopefully I’ll be able to soon report on published poems, but we’ll see.
